SICILY. Syracuse. Timoleon and the Third Democracy, 344-317 BC. Diobol (Silver, 13 mm, 1.35 g, 1 h), Attic standard. ΣΥΡAKOΣ-IΩN Head of Athena facing slightly to left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet and pearl necklace. Rev. Nude youth on horseback to right; above, star. CNG 106 (2017), 106 (same dies). Nanteuil 372 = Sambon & Canessa (19 December 1907), 391 (same dies). Ratto (16 May 1935), 205 (same dies). Triton XVIII (2015), 395 (same dies). Extremely rare. Beautifully toned, sharply struck and perhaps the finest of apparently just five known examples. Nearly extremely fine.
